Our goal is to provide the local community with responsibly grown produce using sustainable agricultural practices. The plant varieties chosen for our farm are based on flavor and nutrition versus extended shelf life. Most consumers don't realize that the mega producers who supply grocery chains choose their varieties based on ability to withstand mechanical harvesting and shipping over long distances. Surprisingly, only 2% of the produce consumed by the 13 million people in Illinois is actually grown here.
An IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program is the cornerstone to our choice of farm production methods and subsequent decisions made for managing pests. The production methods used on our farm require more time and money but we feel they are essential to producing the healthiest produce. The items below explain our growing methods and their positive impact on the farm, environment and our community.
· IPM (Integrated Pest Management)
· Row covers & plastic mulch
· Drip irrigation
· Cover crops
· Beneficial & pollinator insect plantings
